After junior college he continued his career at Lamar University in Texas, a member of the Southland Conference. In his one season at Lamar, he earned two separate 1st team all-conference awards, defensive back, and punt returner respectively. In that season he recorded 94 tackles, including 10 in a game versus SEC member Texas A&M University. Michael spent his last 2 years of eligibility playing for the Leathernecks of Western Illinois University where he was two-time all-conference selection, including being voted to the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer Team. He finished his career at WIU with 151 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, 6 interceptions, 6 forced fumbles, 4 fumble recoveries, and 12 pass break ups. After college, Michael was drafted by the Houston Roughnecks in the 2022 XFL Draft, and also played a season of professional football overseas in the German Football League. We asked Coach Thomas about his thoughts on Michael signing with the Storm for 2024, and he had this to say. “Michael is a big-time signee for us. Look at his stats and watch some of his film…he’s always around the ball, and generally good things happen for his team when he is. Some guys have great measurables, but the athleticism never shows up on film. Michael’s talent and playmaking ability jumps off the screen, and I’m excited to see what he’s capable of in the Arena game.” Please help the Storm franchise and Dodge City Dental Care give a big welcome Southwest Kansas welcome to Michael Lawson.
